Can I sell my caravan if it is still on finance?

The answer depends entirely on which kind of agreement you signed. Here is how to tell, and what to do next.

The short answer

Yes, in most cases you can sell a caravan that still has finance on it. But you cannot simply hand it over and keep paying the monthly instalments. The outstanding balance has to be settled, and in almost every sale it is settled out of the money the caravan is sold for.

The important question is not really "can I sell it?" It is what kind of finance do I have? That one detail changes who legally owns the caravan today, and it changes how the sale has to be handled.

This article is general information only. It is not financial or legal advice. Always check your own agreement and speak to your finance provider before you agree to sell.

Who actually owns the caravan?

Most caravan, motorhome and campervan finance in the UK falls into one of two groups.

With hire purchase or conditional sale, the finance company bought the caravan and you are paying for it in instalments. Until the agreement is fully settled, the finance company is the legal owner. You are the registered keeper and user, not the owner. That means you cannot legally sell it to anyone until the agreement is settled.

With an unsecured personal loan, the money went into your bank account and you bought the caravan with it. The caravan was yours from the day you bought it. The loan is a separate debt between you and the lender. It is not attached to the caravan at all, so you are free to sell whenever you like.

Hire purchase or conditional sale Unsecured personal loan
Who owns the caravan The finance company, until settled You, outright
Is the debt tied to the caravan Yes No
Can you sell before it is paid off Only by settling the agreement Yes, at any time
Shows on a finance check Usually yes No
What happens to the debt after the sale Cleared as part of the sale You keep paying it, or repay it early

One thing worth saying plainly. A personal loan does not disappear when you sell. You still owe that money. Many people use the sale proceeds to clear it, and some lenders charge for early repayment, so ask your lender first.

How to find out which one you have

Dig out the paperwork. The agreement will say what it is, usually near the top of the first page. Look for the words "hire purchase", "conditional sale", "personal contract purchase" or "fixed sum loan".

If you cannot find it, ring the finance provider and ask two questions. What type of agreement is this? And am I the legal owner of the caravan right now? They will tell you straight away.

Be careful about one common misunderstanding. For touring caravans, CRiS registration is not proof of legal ownership. It is a registration scheme that records the chassis number and the keeper's details, and it is useful for identifying a caravan. But holding the CRiS document does not prove you own the caravan, and it does not mean there is no finance outstanding. The same applies to the V5C on a motorhome or campervan. It names the registered keeper, not the owner.

Getting a settlement figure

A settlement figure is the exact amount needed to close your agreement and clear the finance company's interest in the caravan. It is not the same as adding up your remaining monthly payments, because it usually accounts for interest you will no longer pay.

Request it directly from your finance provider, by phone or through your online account. Ask for it in writing, so you have something to work from.

Settlement figures do not last forever. They are normally valid for a short window, often around a couple of weeks, because interest keeps accruing. If your sale takes longer than expected, request an updated figure.

What happens in a sale when finance is outstanding

The usual process is straightforward once everyone knows the position.

  • You agree a price for the caravan.
  • You provide the settlement figure from your finance provider.
  • The settlement amount is paid to the finance company to clear the agreement.
  • Anything left over from the sale price is paid to you.

If the caravan sells for more than the settlement figure, you walk away with the difference and the finance is closed. That is the usual outcome where the agreement is well into its term.

Knowing what your caravan is genuinely worth makes this much easier to plan. A free caravan valuation gives you a real number to hold up against your settlement figure, rather than a guess.

Negative equity, explained plainly

Negative equity simply means your settlement figure is higher than the caravan is worth.

Say the settlement figure is £14,000 and the caravan is worth £12,000. The sale does not raise enough to clear the finance. The £2,000 gap is yours to make up, from savings or by arranging something with your finance provider. The finance company is owed the full settlement regardless of what the caravan sells for.

This happens most often early in an agreement, or where the deposit was small. It is uncomfortable, but it is not unusual. Find out both numbers before you decide anything, then work out whether selling now or waiting suits you better.

Never hide outstanding finance from a buyer

Finance on hire purchase and conditional sale agreements is normally registered against the caravan or vehicle on the national asset registers. Any serious buyer, whether a dealer or a careful private buyer, will run what people commonly call an HPI check before money changes hands. That check flags outstanding finance, and it will find yours.

Hiding it does not work. At best the deal collapses at the last minute and you have wasted weeks. At worst you are trying to sell something you do not legally own, which is a serious matter. If a private buyer does buy a caravan with undisclosed finance still attached, the finance company can pursue the caravan itself, and the buyer can pursue you.

Being upfront costs you nothing. A settled agreement is normal, routine and handled every week by anyone who buys caravans properly.

What to do next

Work through it in order. Confirm whether your agreement is hire purchase, conditional sale or a personal loan. Request a settlement figure in writing. Get a realistic valuation. Compare the two figures so you know where you stand.

At that point you can make a calm decision instead of a rushed one. We buy caravans, motorhomes and campervans anywhere in the UK, with outstanding finance or without. Whether you want to sell a touring caravan or sell a motorhome, the offer is free, there is no obligation to accept, there are no fees, and collection is free if you go ahead.

When you fill in the form, please mention any outstanding finance in the message box, along with the name of your finance provider if you have it to hand. It does not put us off in the slightest. It just means we can handle the settlement properly from the start and give you an accurate picture of what you would be left with.
