Getting rid of an old caravan is harder than it sounds. Councils will not take one, most scrap yards are set up for cars, and hiring a transporter yourself costs real money. Meanwhile it sits there, taking up the drive and slowly getting worse.
Ask before you scrap it
This is the important bit: a lot of caravans people describe as scrap are not scrap. If the chassis is sound and the windows, appliances and fittings are intact, there is value in it even when the bodywork is finished.
Send us the details before you pay anybody to take it away. Worst case we remove it for free. Best case you get a cheque you were not expecting.
Why a caravan is not just scrap metal
A caravan is mostly timber frame, bonded composite panel and plastic, wrapped in a thin aluminium skin. There is far less metal in one than people assume, which is why weighbridge prices do not apply and why most scrap merchants are not interested.
Dismantling one properly means separating the gas system, the 12 volt and mains wiring, the fridge and the upholstery, then dealing with each waste stream correctly. That is the part you are really paying for when somebody quotes to remove it.
Fly-tipping is not worth the risk
Abandoned caravans are a serious problem for landowners, and the penalties are real. Fly-tipping can carry an unlimited fine and, in the worst cases, a prison sentence. Passing it to somebody who will not say where it is going leaves you exposed too, because the duty of care follows the waste.
Using a buyer who removes it properly and keeps records is the clean way out.
